Who Needs Porn When You Find This Stuff in Mainstream Science Fiction

Proof that the writers of the Dune novels were sadomasochists. Now I wonder what the bible-thumping folks whose quest to feverishly protect young-impressionable minds from smut would say about this excerpt from a basically PG-13 series of novels which I first started reading when I was around 12. Of course it might explain my twisted mind.

When he looked down at the thrashing Vladimir, his sweat-drenched clothes, and the defiant grin on his face, the Face Dancer realized another possible problem. The torture might be ineffective for the simple and straight-forward fact that this ghola actually enjoy it.

Anyway, toy bag is packed for tonight.

Frank Herbert clearly has a lot to answer for.

Have you ever read any Dick Francis novels? He’s a Brit writer whose crime fiction books are very good, but ALL of them contain a scene in which the principal character is either physically tortured or degraded (or both) in some way, regardless of whether it fits in with the plot. And I mean torture or degradation, not just a bad guy beating him up, which is expected in crime thrillers. It’s such a feature of his books you can learn to see them coming and skip through them. Of course Dick Francis may just include these scenes because he feels it’s part of such a novel to have the protagonist go through some sort of ordeal, but it does make me wonder…

Ahhhh, yes, it is always fabulous to reflect on those little moments early in life which thoroughly warped us. In the best possible way, of course...
